Don Hutchison has delivered his verdict on Newcastle United’s 2-0 loss to Manchester United on Wednesday night.

The Magpies were subjected to a home defeat courtesy of goals from Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku, a result which means that they remain in 15th place in the Premier League, just two points off the relegation places.

Hutchison believes that the Newcastle team should not be ashamed of how they performed against the Red Devils, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were the better side overall.

“No shame in the Newcastle performance tonight. Played OK worked hard and competed! Man U bench over 200 million quid. Man U the better side over the 90 mins,” he said on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

Hutchison is right – Newcastle did not have to feel any shame for this display against United. They managed to keep them out for over an hour until Lukaku managed to break the deadlock. However, this result really drags Newcastle into the relegation mix at the moment, and this is the one thing that Rafa Benitez had been hoping to avoid for so long. They managed to climb into safety not long ago after a string of decent wins, but they have essentially undone all of that hard work with the displays that they have put out recently. This performance against United was not the worst that they have ever submitted, but they need to start converting those displays into wins if they are to survive this season. Hutchison is spot on by saying that Manchester United were the better team over the 90 minutes – but that is to be expected considering the resurgence they have undergone with their new manager.
