Newcastle United’s chances of selling goalkeeper Rob Elliot this month have been hit by a major blow after he sustained an injury to his back, according to the Chronicle.

The regional newspaper reports on their website that the 6ft 3in 32-year-old – who is fourth choice keeper behind the likes of Martin Dubravka, Freddie Woodman and Karl Darlow – will now need surgery on his back, meaning any chances of selling him have gone out of the window.

Rafa Benitez had previously said that the barely-seen stopper is on the market in this transfer window, but his injury will now need to be looked at as he prepares to be out-of-action.

OPINION

Benitez must be gutted that Elliot has got injured, as it now means that the club will be stuck with him until the summer. He is nowhere near the first team so his injury will not impact upon that, but any clubs that were interested will now be deterred after hearing about the latest setback. The Magpies have three quality stoppers already so the need to keep Elliot on was not really necessary, so cashing in on him was the wisest thing to do. However, the transfer kitty has now taken a slight hit, as they are not going to be receiving any money for Elliot in this window. It is a shame, as Elliot could have really done with a switch this month in order to get some minutes under his belt – but he will now need to wait quite a few months before anything can happen. It is a blow for Benitez, but unfortunately, these things happen.
