Serie A side Empoli are interested in making a move for Newcastle United misfit Achraf Lazaar with progress over his exit imminent, according to Calcio Mercato.

The Italian outlet claims that developments between the two parties are expected to continue in the coming days for a player who is yet to make a first team appearance for the Magpies this season.

Presumably because of his current situation on Tyneside Lazaar himself is thought to be open to a return to the peninsula, where he previously represented Palermo, and exit St James’ Park.

The Chronicle reported earlier this month that manager Rafael Benitez planned to loan Lazaar out in January. It’s unclear whether Emploi’s interest is in a loan or permanent move for the 26-year-old.

OPINION

‘For the love of God Empoli please take him off our hands,’ is what many Newcastle supporters will be thinking upon reading this. The left back has completely failed to make any impression at St James’ Park and is rarely seen in Premier League 2 competition let alone for the first team. It’s time for him to leave the club and so Emploi’s interest is entirely opportune. As mentioned, it is unclear whether the Serie A side want Lazaar temporarily or permanently, but even if they are only targeting a loan the Magpies should insist on an option to buy in the summer. It’s unlikely that Empoli would agree to an obligation to buy, but there should be something in the deal whereby Newcastle have the chance to get out of the Lazaar business. He’s never going to make it on Tyneside so it’s best for all involved that he leaves the club. Let’s hope for everyone’s sake that happens here.
