Newcastle United youngster Liam Gibson is close to joining Accrington Stanley on loan, according to the Lancashire Telegraph.

The newspaper claims that the 21-year-old is heading to the League One side imminently, and is expected to be registered in time to face Bristol Rovers this coming Saturday.

The left back is coming off 90 minutes in Newcastle under-23s’ Checkatrade Trophy defeat to Sunderland on Tuesday night.

Gibson has made 15 appearances in Premier League 2 and Checkatrade Trophy competition this season, and now looks set to get some first team experience.

OPINION

This is a good move for the youngster. It’s important that young players like Gibson go out and get time on loan in order to further their development and give them the best chance of succeeding at St James’ Park or elsewhere in the future. The left back is yet to enjoy any time away from Tyneside and so it seems right that he would be granted a temporary move away now. There are several players in the young Magpies team that faced Sunderland who could probably do with loan spells and Gibson looks like he’s going to be lucky enough to get one. Accrington are a good League One club with an experienced manager in John Coleman so they will likely treat the youngster well and help him along in his development. Stanley have a need at left back so this seems like a move that works for everyone involved.
