Newcastle United are interested in a January swoop for Eintracht Frankfurt defender Jetro Willems, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper reports on its website that the 24-year-old has been identified as a target for the next transfer window, and that the Magpies are plotting to make a move for him when it opens.

The report also states that United face competition for Willems from Serie A side Roma, however, Newcastle may be boosted in the fact that the Italian club are also eyeing Crystal Palace defender Patrick van Aanholt.

Willems joined Frankfurt in 2017 for a figure in the region of £4.5 million, and it understood that they may be convinced to part ways with him if they receive an offer in excess of his transfer fee.

OPINION

Willems has been playing regularly for Frankfurt this season so it is no surprise that they would be reluctant to let him go so easily. However, the fact that he could be persuaded by an offer in excess of £4.5 million will be music to Rafa Benitez’s ears in January. Newcastle are in need of another left-back, and the prospect that they may be able to land him for a fee that will no doubt be within their budget is fantastic news. Yes, Roma are also interested in his services, but with Van Aanholt also on their radar, United have a great chance of landing the defender. Newcastle failed to land a left-back in the summer, and since then have demonstrated just how thin they are in that department with the recent injury to Paul Dummett. Signing a player like Willems is integral to their success in the Premier League this season – so Benitez must pull out all of the stops in order to land him.
