Newcastle will only release an official statement on any takeover once everything has been agreed, according to Chronicle journalist Lee Ryder

Ryder, chief Newcastle United writer for the regional newspaper, claimed in a Q&A on Thursday that a statement would only be made once a handover has taken place.

The North East journo also added that the current potential takeover involving Peter Kenyon is obviously not at that stage yet, meaning no official word is set to come from the club and fans are set to remain in the dark.

“What we’re told is that the first fans will know about it will be a prepared statement that there has been a handover. That will only come after everything is agreed. However, we aren’t at that stage yet,” he said.

OPINION

It is no surprise that Newcastle are not intending to release a statement on the matter until everything is complete. Mike Ashley tends to conduct his business in private, and there is little chance of that changing now. After all, this is an extremely high-stakes situation for him and the club, and any statement before a deal has been completed is an unnecessary risk. If the club released a statement suggesting a takeover was set to happen only for a deal to fall through, then there would be absolute pandemonium on Tyneside. Fans are desperate for a takeover to happen, and any official suggestion of a successful deal carries with it a lot of expectation. Right now, fans are not really expecting much, with Ashley having strung them along in the past, and that is a favourable situation for the owner. Hopefully things do get to that point soon, but as mentioned, not many fans will be holding their breath for that statement to appear.
