Mick Quinn heaped praise on Newcastle United defender Federico Fernandez when looking back at the goings on at his former club in 2018.

The Magpies legend shared that he thought the 29-year-old have improved with each passing game and that he had been a superb signing for the club.

Quinn then added that it was clear that it was an unbelievable business by the Magpies that they got goalkeeper Martin Dubravka and Fernandez for a grand total of £10million as both were likely worth a lot more now.

“That has to be Dubravka (best signing) again,” wrote the Magpies icon in his column for the Chronicle.

“For £4million or even less, I mean it’s superb.

“What do you usually get for that these days?

“Federico Fernandez was also a superb signing, he’s improved in each game – two fantastic signings.

“You’ve got to praise the recruitment team who have dug those players out – unbelievable. £10m for the two of them?

“They’re probably worth a lot more now.”

OPINION

Would anyone argue with Quinn’s assessment of either Dubravka or Fernandez? It seems unlikely as the duo have done enough to warrant praise being draped over them. While it’s easy to understand why Quinn has named the Magpies ever-reliable goalkeeper as the best signing the club made in the summer, Fernandez can make a case for why he deserves the title. There were few expecting the centre-back to make as positive an impact as he did when he arrived at St James Park from Swansea City in the summer. This is because he didn’t overly standout when featuring for the Swans last season, though everyone struggled hence their relegation, and the Magpies did already have impressive centre-backs to call upon. However in his 13 league outings this season, where he has even contributed an assist, Fernandez has been a reassuring presence to have at the back. Hopefully the defender, who missed the clash with Huddersfield Town due to injury, will continue to excel as the season goes on.
