Newcastle United are in pursuit of Leicester City right-back Danny Simpson ahead of the January window opening, according to the Daily Mail.

The national newspaper claim that the Magpies are tracking the 31-year-old full-back, who previously played 138 times for the club, alongside Fulham and several Championship clubs.

The Daily Mail report that Leicester City are currently weighing up whether to offer Simpson a new deal as his current £45,000-a-week contract (Source: Spotrac) expires at the end of the season.

OPINION

The Mail seem to believe that if the Foxes decide not to extend the defender’s stay at the King Power then they face a decision on whether to try and cash in on him in January. This seems understandable as no side enjoys watching a player they’ve invested a lot of money in over the years, walk out of the door for absolutely nothing. However given that Simpson has only featured twice in the Premier League for the Foxes this season and is the wrong side of 30, it’s hard to imagine his price tag being that high anyway. While it’s true that the Magpies could do with another right-back to provide DeAndre Yedlin with competition for a first-team place, Simpson returning for another stint at St James Park would be a surprise. The 31-year-old left the club under a bit of a cloud in 2013 when he exited to join Queens Park Rangers as it was believed that he asked for too much money to stay, as reported by the Chronicle, and this has even seen him booed when playing against the Magpies. The Chronicle stated that in April Simpson was booed by Magpies supporters and this shows that it would be a bit of surprise if the club brought back a player who already is not overly liked by some fans.
