Leeds United are at the front of the queue to sign Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow, according to Football Insider.

The reliable outlet reports on their website that the highflyers have the advantage over Aston Villa – another Championship club who are interested in the 28-year-old – in the race for his signature in the January transfer window.

Leeds have had a series of talks with the shot-stopper’s representatives over a potential move next month, a development which means that they are the most likely destination for the barely-seen player in the New Year.

OPINION

Darlow has not made a single appearance in the Premier League this season, so it is unlikely he will be missed much if he does end up moving to Leeds. A switch to the Championship is just what he needs to increase his first team opportunities, as he was unlikely to usurp first choice Martin Dubravka from the number one spot any time soon. However, this does decrease the number of options available in this position if Darlow departs. It means he will only have Rob Elliot as back-up and youngster Freddie Woodman to call upon if needs must, so whether Benitez will be happy to let Darlow leave remains to be seen. Nevertheless, a move to Elland Road looks firmly on the cards now and that can only be good news for the stopper himself. He may have Bailey Peacock-Farrell as competition if he joins forces, but that should be the least of his worries at the moment.
