Labour MP for Newcastle Central Chi Onwurah took to her social media to give her opinion that Mike Ashley was moving closer to selling Newcastle United.

The businessman publicly stated that he would like to sell the club “by January”, as transcribed by The Chronicle, with the Telegraph going on to claim that Ashley was in advanced talks about selling the Magpies.

Onwurah tweeted via her verified account twice regarding the claims that progress was being made regarding the Magpies being taken over by a new owner, to share that the overwhelming view was that it was “Mr Ashley’s annual Christmas joke.”

“Is this for real?” pondered the MP on Monday, before continuing to share her views in another Tweet on Tuesday.

“Overwhelming view is it’s Mr Ashley’s annual Christmas joke. There are no sanctions for lying to or Fans. But there are for misleading a House of Commons Select Committee. I’d like to see owner account for his behaviour to the Committee.”

OPINION

Onwurah is tweeting what every Newcastle fan fears and that is that the latest Magpies takeover claims will amount to nothing. There was a lot of buzz around the Magpies being taken over last Christmas just ahead of the January transfer window opening, and everyone knows how that turned out. It seems Onwurah is of the opinion that Ashley needs to be held accountable and that there needs to be sanctions in place to stop him potentially lying to fans. Onwurah, who is a Newcastle United fan, has spoken out publicly about Ashley’s ownership of the Magpies before and even submitted a petition to parliament, as reported by the Guardian, to share that Ashley had not made support forthcoming for her club. While some Magpies fans are clinging to the hope that the latest progress in the club changing owner is legit and promising, it seems the Labour MP isn’t ready to celebrate Ashley is moving on until everything is in place.
