Newcastle United defender DeAndre Yedlin inflicted a selection headache upon Rafa Benitez after having a nightmare display against West Ham on Saturday.

The Hammers secured a 3-0 win over the Magpies at St James Park in what was a miserable day at the office for Benitez and his side.

While several Magpies players struggled to submit worthy performances, Yedlin in particular stood out for all the wrong reasons.

The pacey right-back was given the run around by West Ham attacker Felipe Anderson as he just was defensively exposed time and time again.

The Hammers sensation was able to glide past Yedlin like he wasn’t even there and even when the right-back tried to go in hard on the Brazilian to stop him, it just seem to inspire the winger to keep heaping misery on the Magpies.

Given that Benitez doesn’t have many options at right-back, he was no doubt hoping that Yedlin had turned a corner and had finally improved the defensive side of his game.

The Magpies speed demon has looked generally better than he did in his 2017/18 campaign in his 13 outings so far this season when it comes to his defensive duties, with his recent display against Burnley being Man of the Match worthy in many ways.

Yet it was clear that Yedlin was still the same naive full-back on Saturday that joined from Tottenham in 2016, as he fell for every trick in the book and looked just like a liability for his side.

Benitez made it his mission to find a new right-back to compete with Yedlin in the summer, as reported the Chronicle, but didn’t welcome a new player in that position.

While the Spanish manager just wanted competition for Yedlin at the time, he may now feel he needs to welcome two new defensively sound right-backs to the club as the American clearly can be easily torn apart if targeted.

This all means that the Magpies’ speed demon’s latest display has caused Benitez a headache, not just because he doesn’t have many options to replace him with currently but it means he may need to welcome two new right-backs sooner than later to see out his vision for the club.
