Newcastle must start Fernandez against Liverpool

Whatever tactical approach Rafael Benitez goes for and whatever combination of players the Spaniard favours, it’s going to be incredibly difficult for Newcastle United to get anything against Liverpool on Wednesday.

That’s just a fact. But the Magpies boss can certainly make life easier for himself by recalling defender Federico Fernandez for the encounter with the Premier League leaders.

The former Swansea City man has missed some game time through injury lately, however he returned to the substitutes bench against Fulham last time out, and must be handed a start against the Reds.

Simply put, the Argentine is the best defender at Benitez’s disposal. The 29-year-old has arguably had the finest season to date of any Newcastle player, and he will be key in any hopes the team have of keeping the hosts out at Anfield.

Jamaal Lascelles has looked better of late, but the captain has still had a rough time of things this campaign. Fabian Schar has been good and so deserves to keep his place, but Fernandez is certainly preferable to Lascelles at this moment in time.

There is no one in this Newcastle defence that has the tactical awareness and the vision at the back that Fernandez possesses. He simply sees things better than his other defenders and is able to make vital interceptions and blocks as a consequence.

As mentioned above, he likely won’t be enough to really affect the scoreline here, Liverpool are simply that good, but it would be nonsensical to leave him out on Wednesday.

If he is back to 100% fitness then there’s no reason not to start Fernandez at Anfield. He is the best defender at St James’ Park and deserves the opportunity to take on one of the finest teams in the top flight. Over to you, Rafa.
