Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has the ability to be a gamechanger but you wouldn’t have thought that if you witnessed his display against West Ham on Saturday.

The 26-year-old midfielder replaced Kenedy in the 70th minute of Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to the Hammers and that it’s more than enough time to make your mark on a game.

However Sky pundit Matt Le Tissier beautifully summed up Shelvey’s appearance by stating three words, ‘very little impact’ as that was the perfect way to summarise his display.

“Shelvey did come on in the second half, but made very little impact,” said the pundit on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday (December 1st 17:20).

The damning verdict was further proof that the midfielder is stuck in cruise control as he hasn’t really shone that bright considering his ability this season.

Shelvey is one of the best passers in the Premier League as there are few players who can hit long accurate passes like he can, in order to create opportunities.

Yet when he entered the field he didn’t look like a player capable of getting out of second gear, nor did he like one who had a point to prove.

The midfielder should be more fired up than ever to showcase his ability as during his recent spell with injury that has kept him on the sidelines, others have stepped up in his absence and staked a claim for why he doesn’t deserve a place back in the team.

Far too often last season and this season, Shelvey looks like he is going through the motions and that simply can’t be allowed to the be case, as he is a player who can cause the Magpies to win games that they have no right winning.

Given that the clash with the Hammers was Shelvey’s return to the team from injury, you feel he would have enter the field of play with a little more gusto rather than matching his teammates’ lacklustre performance.

So when you consider that Shelvey was cruising ahead of his injury, Le Tissier’s verdict confirms the talented player is still stuck in cruise control despite an enforced break from first-team action.
