Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has praised Magpies striker Salomon Rondon for his goal against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

The Venezuelan steered his team to a 1-0 victory over David Wagner’s side at the John Smith’s Stadium, and Shearer was delighted with his old side’s efforts.

“A brilliant three points [for] Newcastle and a great team goal finished by Salomon Rondon. Watch it on Match of the Day later,” he said on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

Shearer is bang on the money, here. This was a massive three points for Newcastle, not only because of the proximity of the two teams in the Premier League table, but because of the way the game went. Newcastle were dreadful in the first half on Saturday, but produced a disciplined performance after the break to secure victory. The goal from Rondon was the only real moment of quality in the game, as the Magpies launched a beautiful counter attack that involved several players before the West Bromwich Albion loanee turned the ball in with a cool finish. Rafael Benitez’s side weren’t at their best against the Terriers but they got the job done with an organised performance moulded in the image of their manager. They knew what they needed to do on Saturday and ultimately they got the job done. Benitez will be pleased with his team’s efforts, as Shearer clearly is.
