Spanish side Real Sociedad are willing to offer Newcastle United the opportunity to sign goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, according to El Gol Digital.

The Spanish outlet claims that Asier Garitano’s side are willing to part with a player who has made just seven appearances in all competitions this season.

The Magpies are said to be keen on Real Madrid shot-stopper Kiko Casilla, and manager Rafael Benitez is thought to be especially interested in the Spaniard, but Sociedad are willing to sell for cheaper than Madrid.

Rulli has been capped twice by Argentina and was first choice for Sociedad last season, but has lost his place to Miguel Angel Moya in recent months.

OPINION

Newcastle actually have a pretty solid goalkeeping situation so it’s somewhat of a surprise to see them linked with both Casilla and Rulli. Martin Dubravka is firmly entrenched as the starter and has been phenomenal since joining the club in January, so it wouldn’t appear as if either ‘keeper would be coming in as first choice at St James’ Park. The Slovakian is backed up by Karl Darlow, Freddie Woodman and Rob Elliot so unless one of those men were to leave the Magpies it would appear unlikely that either Casilla or Rulli would be brought in. Rulli was once a promising young shot-stopper but has gone off the boil slightly in the past year or so. This season has seen him split time with Moya, with the veteran goalkeeper ruling the roost in recent weeks. Rulli may be on his way out of Sociedad at some point in the future, but Newcastle would appear to be a strange destination for him at this moment in time.
