Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer delivered an emphatic response when asked if he ever thought ‘what if’ about a potential move to Manchester United.
There has been much discussion about Shearer never moving to Old Trafford over the years, with the player instead content with a move to his hometown club instead.
And when a Twitter user asked the Magpies great if he ever thinks ‘what if’ about a move to United, Shearer stated on his personal Twitter account that he never does.
NEVER! I couldn’t stand them then and I can’t stand them now!!!
Instead, he revealed that he couldn’t stand the Red Devils then and he still can’t now, providing a definitive answer to the oft-posed question.
OPINION
Newcastle fans will love Shearer’s response, here. There has been much debate over the years about Shearer potentially moving to United during his prime but it was never meant to be. He won his Premier League title with Blackburn Rovers and then enjoyed a boyhood dream by turning out for his hometown club. In this day and age it’s unlikely that a player as good as Shearer would choose a move to Blackburn or Newcastle over United – even if those two teams were at the level now that they were back then – but that’s what makes players like Shearer stand out. It would be interesting to know why Shearer can’t stand United, or if he was even being serious or not. The thought of Shearer wearing a United shirt now seems, quite frankly, ridiculous, and it’s a positive thing that it never happened. He wanted to play for Newcastle and he was able to achieve that goal, becoming a club legend in the process. He’s already beloved on Tyneside, but his response here will only increase the adoration.
