Ian Wright revealed he is baffled by the timing of Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley revealing that the club may be sold in the near future.

The BBC pundit shared why he didn’t want to bash the Magpies senior man, he had to ask whether the businessman had built up everybody’s expectations about a potential sale in order to avoid spending money in the January transfer window.

Wright shared that he found it weird of Ashley to start up takeover talk when he did and added that it he also found it awkward giving that the Magpies were starting to turn things around on the pitch.

“Looking with my critical eye towards the owner, I’m not bashing him or anything but for him to come out at this point and mention about the sale and this and that, has he said that simply because he doesn’t want to buy anyone in January?” questioned Wright on BBC Radio 5 Live on Monday (December 17th, as heard in a Twitter clip on the broadcaster’s social media account).

“To bolster them up as he might be selling the place, is he going to spend money? Is he waiting, I just feel, something about it that just made me feel well that seems a bit weird for him to come out at this stage and mention selling the club and build up everybody’s expectations?

“Is he going to buy anyone? No he’s not going to buy anyone as he doesn’t know if he is going to sell them, it just felt really, for me, awkward, in a time when Newcastle are really starting to get it going and their manager is brilliant.

“Like we’ve mentioned, Pellegrini brilliant, Rafa brilliant and working with peanuts and still getting a good tune out of Newcastle, I hope for Newcastle fans it’s not a false stall and he’s not doing…yeah but at end of day it just seems like a callous ploy not to buy anyone in January.”

OPINION

Wright is not only baffled by Ashley’s actions but he grows increasingly dubious about them as he continues to speak. The BBC pundit seems to want to avoid outright stating he doesn’t believe the  Magpies are about to change owners, as he probably doesn’t have inside information, but he definitely seems suspicious. Wright previously had Magpies supporters on social media singing his praises in October after tearing into Ashley over his running of the club and fans will no doubt echo the pundit’s latest thoughts. Until the Magpies officially change hands, no one is going to feel overly hopeful that Ashley is about to get his wish and sell the club. There was a lot of takeover talk regarding the Magpies around this time last season and that ended up amounting to nothing. However as Wright said, for the sake of Newcastle fans you really want all the talk of a takeover to amount to something concrete in the near future.
