Newcastle United are in the race to sign Hull City attacker Jarrod Bowen ahead of the January transfer window opening, according to the Daily Mail.

The national newspaper claim that Hull value their 22-year-old winger in excess of £6.5million and had already seen the Magpies as well as Brighton express their interest in him ahead of the winter window opening.

The Daily Mail report that Championship leaders Leeds United are also keen on securing the services of Bowen and hopeful of securing him despite his potential price tag.

OPINION

Bowen, who can play as a winger on either flank as well as secondary striker, has done tremendously well in the Championship this season and it’s easy to see why teams are clambering for his signature. The 22-year-old has been involved in 11 goals in 18/19 so far as he has scored eight and assisted three in the 23 league outings he has made. While those are impressive numbers, it’s worth noting that Bowen isn’t a one-season wonder as wowed Hull fans last season by scoring 15 goals in 44 outings across all competitions. The only issue about the Magpies pursuing Bowen is that, it’s unclear if he’d be able to keep providing the goals if playing in the Premier League. While the 22-year-old made seven brief appearances in England’s top-flight in the 2016/17 season with Hull, it wasn’t enough to evaluate his talent, also he has come on leaps and bounds since then. Given that Rafa Benitez may be working with a tight budget, investing a few million in Bowen for that reason, may carry a little bit of a risk if he expects the winger to be able to make a difference in the second half of the season at St James Park.
