Newcastle United are making progress in their bid to turn Salomon Rondon’s loan deal into a permanent one in the January transfer window, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper’s transfer blog [11.16am] reports that the Magpies are “winning the battle” to keep the services of the 6ft 1in [Transfermarkt] striker for the foreseeable future, with West Brom also happy to keep Dwight Gayle after he made the move to the Hawthorns in the summer.

Rondon has netted two in his last three appearances, including the match winner against Huddersfield on Saturday, which now means that United sit in 14th place.

OPINION

Newcastle would be mad not to retain Rondon’s services on a permanent basis at some point next month. Rondon has proved that he is just the striker Newcastle need, especially as  he is fitter than he has ever been before. There is no doubt that he will be pivotal to their fortunes this season, and the fact that West Brom are happy to keep Gayle permanently will also be a boost to their chances of keeping him. He needs Newcastle, and Newcastle certainly need him and his goals. He has proven the doubters wrong with his recent form, so it would only be right for him to continue that for as long as he can. He was never the most prolific striker for West Brom and that is not going to change, but he is a player who is incredibly reliable and will always put the work in for his team. Fans will have their fingers crossed that he remains a Newcastle player at the end of the season, especially if he adds to his tally.
