Robert Huth has launched a stinging attack on Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez following their 2-1 loss to Wolves on Sunday.

The former 6ft 3in Leicester City colossus said that the Spaniard needs to stop making excuses for his team’s loss after he cried out for VAR (Video Assistant Referee) following Wolves’ stoppage time goal that earned them all three points.

He said that the referee got his decisions spot on during the game and claimed that Benitez is “hiding behind the victim card” to cover up for the fact that his players made crucial errors.

“He’s hiding behind the fact that his players made a mistake. He’s playing the victim card here, saying ‘ah he [Willy Boly] should have been sent off’. Why is Yedlin in the position where he has to make a foul? Why isn’t Kenedy not doing the hard yards all the way back?” he said on beIN SPORTS.

“Why is he bringing all of this up? In my opinion, the ref got both decisions spot on, he needs to look at his team.”

OPINION

Yes, admittedly it was a cruel defeat for Newcastle, but Huth is right – Benitez is ignoring the fact that his team made some vital mistakes that ultimately cost them any points. Like he pointed out, Yedlin was in the position where he had to make the foul, even as the last man – mainly down to Kenedy not bothering to track back and provide cover. Benitez is an experienced enough manager not to be making such excuses and face up to the fact that his side were the weaker team, as hiding behind it all is not going to be beneficial to Newcastle’s success. Yes, VAR is something that will be introduced, but the lack of it in this game is not the reason why United lost out. Poor decision making and limited quality is what cost them, and the faster the manager recognises that, the better. Over to you, Rafa.
