Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett has talked up his side’s chance of recording an unlikely victory when Manchester United visit St. James’ Park on Wednesday.

The Reds have failed to win on Tyneside since March 2015, and the Welsh international is hoping that the current Magpies’ squad can maintain that record this season.

Speaking after his team’s 1-1 draw with Watford on Saturday, as quoted on the club’s official website, Dummett said: “It’s disappointing not to hold out and pick up the three points, but we have to be positive and move on to the next game.

“Last season, we beat Manchester United and went on a bit of a run after that, and hopefully we can achieve the same as that this season.

“They’ve got a new manager and they’ve won a few games, so their confidence will be high coming to play against us. But I think Manchester United have always found it hard playing at St James’ Park against us.

“We’ll be doing our best to try and take points off them – hopefully three – and hopefully kick on the same as we did last season.”

OPINION

Dummett’s optimism is admirable, and Newcastle have to stay positive if they are to fight their away up the Premier League table and away from a relegation battle, but they will be under no illusions as to how hard getting a result against this newly resurgent Manchester United side will be. The Reds are starting look like the United of old – free scoring and ruthless – and the Magpies will have to be at their very best to see them off. It’s not impossible, however, and if Rafa Benitez can set his team up to frustrate their visitors, and if they can rely on Salomon Rondon to take one of the chances that will inevitably present themselves and they could be on for a famous there points. Benitez will not be expecting to get much from this one, but the potential boost in confidence a positive result could give the Toon Army could be just as crucial as three unexpected points for their hopes of survival.
