Newcastle United left back Paul Dummett could be in line to return for the club against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claim that the 27-year-old will miss Wednesday’s trip to Everton, but could make his comeback from injury against Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

The Welshman has been missing for the Magpies since picking up an injury on international duty last month, with manager  Rafael Benitez having to scramble to find a replacement for him in the last couple of games.

The Spaniard switched to a five man defence with two wing backs against Burnley, before utilising right back Javier Manquillo on the left against West Ham United on Saturday.

OPINION

Dummett’s injury has really laid bare the lack of options Benitez has at left back at the moment. Acraf Lazaar is the only other recognised player in the position at the club, and he clearly does not have the trust of the manager. There are a few players who can operate in the position in a pinch, like Manquillo and Ciaran Clark, but the Spaniard will be desperate for Dummett to return against Wolves. The former Liverpool boss must surely now be looking at brining in another full back in January because this current situation is untenable. He needs to have proper options in every area of the pitch and he simply doesn’t at left back. He needs some genuine competition for Dummett, not a revolving cast of characters who combine to replace him any time he goes down injured. Let’s wait and see if the position is addressed in the winter transfer window.
