Newcastle United have all but completed a deal to sign Atlanta United star Miguel Almiron, according to Paraguayan journalist Roberto Rojas.

Rojas reported on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday that a major January deal was extremely close for the 24-year-old attacking midfielder.

It is said that the deal will likely take the shape of an initial loan with a £15million option to buy at the end of the campaign, with there being just a few small things left to sort.

The Paraguay international maestro has been in the form of his life for Atlanta this season, netting 13 goals and supplying 13 assists on their way to the MLS Cup final on the 9th of December.

OPINION

This would be a huge boost for Newcastle if true. The Magpies have been on Almiron’s tail for several weeks now, along with many other top European clubs. The Paraguay international has been in some serious form for MLS newcomers Atlanta, with Almiron registering an incredible 13 goals and 13 assists this season. Those kind of numbers are bound to attract a shedload of interest from around the world, and that is exactly what has happened. Credit to Newcastle though – the Magpies have registered their interest early with Steve Nickson reportedly jetting out to the USA for talks in recent weeks. Obviously Rojas’s claim is yet to be corroborated, and is unlikely to be for a while, but it does look as though the Mags are close to getting their man. For Rafa Benitez, who has been crying out for a playmaker, this is massive news. Should the move happen, Almiron could play a huge role for the club in their quest for survival and more this season.
