Rafa Benitez must boldly unleash Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar against Bournemouth on Saturday even if it means axing Jamaal Lascelles.

The Chronicle reported that the 26-year-old centre-back would get to make his second start in the Premier League against the Cherries this season if Benitez had any doubts about Lascelles’ fitness.

However Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie shared via his personal Twitter that Lascelles had already returned to training which implies he is over the knock that saw him depart the clash against Watford early.

While the Magpies captain is a notable figure, Schar wowed when replacing him during the 1-0 victory over the Hornets and that performance shouldn’t go unrewarded.

Schar has barely been used by Benitez since joining the club in the summer, he has made only three appearances, and given his ability to be solid at the back while also aiding the side’s attack due to being an excellent passer, then he must play on Saturday.

The Chronicle’s report shared that it would be a bold call by Benitez to drop Lascelles, given his status at the club, in favour of Schar if the defender was fit, but it’s the right choice to make on this occasion.

While Lascelles hasn’t been one of the club’s worst performers by any means this season, he hasn’t exactly knocked it out of the park in all of his outings.

So it wouldn’t be overly harsh to rest him for Saturday’s clash to see if Schar can shine bright again and deliver the goods against Eddies Howe’s side.

The Magpies need to string several results together after their poor start to the season and after winning their first match of the season, Benitez must do what he can to build on that positive result.

This means Schar has to be preferred ahead of Lascelles against Bournemouth, at least on this occasion.
