Newcastle United head of recruitment Steve Nickson is to be sent out on a transfer mission in a bid to lure Miguel Almiron from Atlanta United, according to the Chronicle.

The regional newspaper reports on their website that United are sending Nickson to the United States to meet with the club as well as Almiron’s agent, in order to get ahead in the race to sign the playmaker before Newcastle’s Premier League rivals.

The report adds that the highly-rated player’s representatives have also been to the UK to look other potential moves for January, with Tottenham, West Ham and Arsenal also interested, as well as clubs from La Liga and Serie A.

OPINION

It is no surprise that Newcastle have sent Nickson out on a transfer mission in order to get ahead in the race to sign Almiron – he is one of the most sought-after talents at the moment and Rafa Benitez would have been mad not to make a move before the January transfer window opens. They do face stern competition however in the shape of some of their league rivals, so they have made a good move by getting in early for him. There is no doubt that Benitez wants Almiron at the club and by the looks of it, they are serious about signing him no matter what the price tag. Yes, it would mean that they would have to get near or break the current club transfer record, but it would all be worth it for a player of Almiron’s creativity and technical ability. He has already taken the MLS by storm in this campaign, and he would surely set the top-flight alight no matter what club he ends up joining.
