Newcastle United right back Jamie Sterry has been suffering with a niggling injury, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that the 22-year-old is considered to be unlikely to feature against Burnley next Monday as a result of the setback.

The Magpies are currently sweating over the fitness of starting left back Paul Dummett who suffered an injury on international duty with Wales on Friday.

Sterry would have been considered one of the leading candidates to deputise for the Welshman if he were fit, but it now appears that that won’t be the case.

OPINION

This is unfortunate for Sterry because this would have been an ideal opportunity for manager Rafael Benitez to blood the youngster in the Premier League. Dummett’s possible absence through injury is potentially a huge blow for the Spaniard, especially because he does not have a trusted option to fill in for the 27-year-old on the left hand side of the defence. Sterry would likely have been a leading option, then, to replace Dummett, although it would mean him operating on the opposite side of the defence to where he usually plays. However, that will likely be the case if Javier Manquillo starts on the left against the Clarets as well. Sterry needs to reignite his stalling Magpies career after struggling on loan at Crewe Alexandra in the second half of last season, and this would have been an excellent opportunity for him to do so. Alas, it doesn’t look like it’ll happen for the youngster.
