Swansea City manager Graham Potter told the BBC this week that Swans trio Nathan Dyer, Wayne Routledge and Luciano Narsingh are free to leave the club.

All three players are wingers, and wing help is something that Newcastle United desperately need in January. Perhaps, then, the club should consider making a move for Narsingh come the winter transfer window.

The Dutch attacker is by far the youngest of the group, and is also the most naturally talented. His time in Wales hasn’t gone quite to plan, but he remains a fine player who could contribute significantly to a team in need. Plus, his transfer fee likely wouldn’t be high seeing as Swansea are looking to offload him.

Narsingh has 19 cap for the Netherlands, which is no mean feat. He showed during his time with PSV Eindhoven that he has the talent to make an impact at the highest level, but for whatever reason it simply didn’t take off for him with the Swans.

Perhaps that was because he joined a team in turmoil who were doomed for relegation? At Newcastle, he would be in a far more stable situation with a manager who is known to improve players.

Narsingh’s pace and end product could be exactly what the Magpies need. In Holland he was a significant goal threat from the wings, something which Rafael Benitez’s side clearly don’t have.

He is an exciting player, someone who would get the St James’ Park crowd on their feet, plus he will likely have a point to prove in the Premier League after failing to impress at the Liberty Stadium.

One bad spell doesn’t make you a bad player. Diego Forlan was a Manchester United flop, and he went on to become one the world’s greatest strikers. Andrej Kramaric couldn’t cut it at Leicester City, but has been banging them in for Hoffenheim. It works in the reverse as well, Philippe Coutinho was considered a disappointment at Inter Milan, but became one of the world’s finest players at Liverpool.

Now, that’s not to say that Narsingh would experience the sort of success that those players did, but you sense there is more in the tank than what he showed at Swansea.

He just needs a team to take a chance on him, and Newcastle seem ideally situated to do so. A January move for the 27-year-old could come to be looked at as a stroke of genius by the Magpies.
