For Newcastle United, full back is one of the main problem positions that the club must be looking to solve in the January transfer window.

DeAndre Yedlin and Paul Dummett have virtually no competition for their places as the team’s starting full backs, meaning that new arrivals are a must.

It just so happens that the Telegraph reports that Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is ready to offload Marcos Rojo in the winter transfer window in order to make room for a new centre half.

The Argentine is exactly the sort of player the Magpies need and such a big name capture would have St James’ Park erupting on his debut.

Although proficient as a centre back, Rojo has also shown that he is more than capable on the left hand side of the defence and he would instantly provide a wake up call for Dummett, showing him that he is not guaranteed a first team spot and that he needs to up his game.

Not that the Welshman has been bad this year; he’s far from the worst offender in this Newcastle team, but he could do with someone breathing down his neck to remind him that he is not beyond hooking if his performances merit it.

Rojo has experience of playing for a top side and is an established international performer. His versatility would be a bonus for the Magpies, but he would mainly operate as a left back.

The 28-year-old offers far more of an attacking threat than Dummett, and at 28 years of age is just now entering the prime of his career.

Seemingly unwanted at Old Trafford, it would make sense for Rafael Benitez to make a move for him come January.

An extra injection of quality on the left hand side would do the team a world of good, while providing Kenedy with more help going forward on that flank.

This is an opportunity that is too good to pass up for Newcastle; they must make a move for Rojo in January while he remains in Mourinho’s doghouse.
