It is critical that Newcastle United make a move for reported transfer target Miguel Almiron after his agent Daniel Campos said that there have been no formal offers for his client.

The Chronicle reported recently that the Magpies are interested in the Atlanta United midfielder after Campos was seen in the stands for the team’s 2-1 win over Bournemouth before the international break.

Campos has now issued an update: “At the moment, there is no formal offer,” he told journalist Roberto Rojas, who tweeted the news from his personal Twitter account. “There is just an enquiry, the president of Atlanta is also informing and there is still an intention. Other clubs in Spain and Italy are interested but there is a lot that needs to happen.

“Sincerely we don’t see anything advanced as we haven’t approached the opening of the transfer window, but if you ask me, there is a high chance he will go. I just came back from England for 10 days but I will be clear, there is no formal offer yet made by any of these clubs.”

This is an interesting from Campos. On the one hand Newcastle haven’t yet made an official offer for the player so they might still be mulling over their interest in Almiron. But, on the other hand, Campos claims that there is a high chance his client will leave Atlanta in the coming transfer window.

Newcastle’s chances of signing the 24-year-old were surely increased by Campos’ presence at the Bournemouth game, and the Paraguay international is exactly the sort of talent that the Magpies need.

They require someone who can unlock the door of a packed defence and provide a bit of extra guile in their attacking work.

Rafael Benitez doesn’t really have anyone like that at the moment and Almiron could be that player for him. Newcastle will have to make an official bid for that to happen, of course, something which is becoming more and more important by the game.

It’s vital they respond to Campos’ words. Almiron has been tearing it up in the MLS and won’t be available for a club like Newcastle forever.

It’s imperative that they make their move in January before it’s too late, and fill a hole that has been gaping at St James’ Park for some time.
