Newcastle right-back DeAndre Yedlin started for the USA as they lost 3-0 to England in a friendly at Wembley on Thursday, and some fans on Twitter have destroyed the flyer for a poor display.

Jesse Lingard opened the scoring on the night with a brilliant curler from 20 yards before Liverpool ace Trent Alexander-Arnold opened his international account with a low drive, with Callum Wilson rounding things off with a debut goal.

Yedlin struggled to make an impact at right-back for the USA despite some passages of nice link-up play, and fans on Twitter have singled out the Newcastle player for criticism after the loss.

COMMENTARY

These fans were obviously less than impressed with Yedlin’s performance on Thursday for the USA, and you can see why. The Newcastle flyer was far from his best against the Three Lions, and his lack of form for the national side is obviously grating on some fans. In truth, Yedlin has been extremely inconsistent for Newcastle as well this season, and the Magpies need to strengthen at full-back if they want to make any progress. Yedlin basically walks straight into the starting lineup at the moment, and that alarming lack of depth is not good enough for a Premier League side. Yedlin is obviously a good player, but as pointed out by some fans here there are also some clear deficiencies in his game. Sometimes he relies far too much on his pace, with his positioning letting him down often. That needs to change if he wants to become a top player.
