Several Newcastle United fans were left baffled on social media after their club were listed in the race for Real Sociedad defender Diego Llorente and it’s easy to see why. Spanish outlet Cadena SER claimed that the Magpies were one of the Premier League teams pursuing the 6ft 1in tall centre-back (Source: Transfermarkt) even though he’d cost £26.6million due to a release clause in his contract. When you consider that Rafa Benitez has so many quality centre-backs to call upon, despite Llorente’s talents, it’d be a weird signing to make. As one Magpies fan tweeted, unless the Magpies boss wants to field 10 central defenders to make his side the immovable object, any form of desire for the 25-year-old is down right bizarre. While some may have questioned the report’s accuracy, one did claim that it was textbook Mike Ashley as the club were being linked to a player that top sides would get ahead of them.
