Newcastle United Under-21s beat Grimsby Town 3-2 at Blundell Park on Tuesday to secure top spot in Group G in the Checkatrade Trophy, and many fans have taken to Twitter to rave about striker Elias Sorensen.

Grimsby scored early but the 19-year-old Dane provided the assist for Cal Roberts’ equaliser before scoring himself to take the Magpies ahead, with Matty Longstaff then securing the win with a free-kick after Grimsby hit back.

Newcastle fans have been reacting to the result on Twitter, with many singling out Sorensen for another goalscoring display and calling for him to be given a chance in the first-team.

COMMENTARY

These Newcastle fans obviously rate Sorensen very highly as the Dane underlined his potential with another goalscoring display for the club’s development squad. The 19-year-old striker has been in prolific form for the Magpies this season, with his goal on Tuesday evening taking his tally to 15 for the season. His form has led to countless calls for him to be promoted to the first-team, with the senior squad struggling in front of goal this term, but that does not look likely to happen at the moment. Manager Rafa Benitez directly responded to the calls by claiming that the pressure of first-team football could damage Sorensen in the long-run, and urged patience with his development. That being said, if Sorensen continues to score at this kind of rate for the reserves, then Benitez will surely have to take a look at him at some point, especially if the Magpies continue their low-scoring run.
