National League side Gateshead are the latest team to enter the race for Newcastle United teenager Elias Sorensen, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that the Magpies’ near neighbours are interested in bringing in the 19-year-old on loan for the second half of the season.

The Chronicle’s report states that a number of Football League sides are looking at the striker, while Gateshead’s National League rivals Hartlepool United are interested.

The young Dane has been in sensational form for Newcastle’s U-23’s side this campaign, netting 15 goals to date amid shouts for a first team call up.

OPINION

This would be an interesting move for Sorensen. Obviously a Football League club would be seen as a more attractive proposition for the player, and possibly the club, but Gateshead are a stable, local club who would be able to offer Sorensen a position as their number one frontman. The vicinity of Gateshead to St James’ Park means that the Magpies hierarchy would be able to keep close tabs on the teenager and monitor his progress for the Heed. Some current Newcastle players have had spells on loan at Gateshead, most notably left back Paul Dummett, and the club’s local neighbours could be an ideal next step for the striker. Sorensen simply needs regular first team football now, at whatever level, and sending him to the National League before he makes the step up to the Football League could prove to an inspired decision by manager RafaelĀ Benitez. Let’s wait and see what happens come January.
