Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez has agreed personal terms on a new contract that will extend his stay at the club for five years, according to the Chronicle.

The regional newspaper reports on its website that the club’s top brass have greenlighted the Spaniard’s salary, as well as a new five-year contract to keep him at St James’ Park until 2024, with positive noises coming from the ongoing talks between the parties.

However, the report also states that there is still work that needs to be done before a final agreement is made on Benitez’ future – but the manager admits that it is not the money that will get him to stay, it is assurances about Newcastle’s youth side.

OPINION

The fact that Benitez is ever closer to extending his stay at Newcastle will delight the fans by the masses. There has been an ongoing debate on whether the Spaniard will stay at Newcastle, with many rumours circulating about how he could quit at the end of the season. However, if this report is anything to go by, that certainly is not the case in the slightest. The fact that Benitez is not that bothered about his salary tells you all you need to know about the manager – he is more motivated about helping the club’s younger players thrive rather than his own financial gain. There are not many managers like this around anymore, and  fans will no doubt be scratching their heads at why he did not depart the club before. Nevertheless, he is not leaving any time soon – and that may just be the news that puts the icing on the cake for the supporters after the team’s monumental win on Saturday.
