Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez has shot down multiple attempts from managing director Lee Charnley to discuss a new contract at St. James’ Park, according to Chronicle journalist Chris Waugh

Speaking in a Chronicle Q&A on Wednesday, Waugh revealed that Charnley has tried to raise the subject with Benitez several times over the past two months, but has had no luck in convincing the Spaniard to reopen talks.

Waugh claims that Benitez has shelved discussions until the conclusion of the January transfer window, with the manager looking for certain assurances from club bosses before signing on.

OPINION

It is no surprise to hear that Benitez is continuing to shoot down Charnley’s attempts to get him to open talks over a new contract. From his point of view, despite the positive noises coming from the club hierarchy in recent weeks, nothing has changed yet. No matter how many promises are made by Charnley and Mike Ashley, Benitez will want to see action and results before signing on for another few years. The January transfer window gives club bosses the perfect opportunity to put their money where there mouth is and show Benitez that they are ready to back him. The squad clearly needs a lot of work after such a poor start to the season, and in today’s market it will take significant funds for that to happen. What happens in the January window will likely dictate whether Benitez signs that new deal, so Charnley may as well give up his attempts to open talks until February.
