Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett will undergo scans in the early part of this week to determine the severity of the injury he suffered on international duty, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper reported on their live blog [18/11; 20:13] that the left back will go for further scans this week now that the injury has had time to settle.

The 27-year-old came off with the problem during Wales’ defeat to Denmark on Friday night, and he is considered touch and go for the Magpies’ game against Burnley next Monday.

Dummett has been firmly entrenched as manager Rafael Benitez’s first choice left back this season, and the Spaniard would be loath to lose him for the Clarets clash.

OPINION

Dummett’s injury was a terrible blow for Newcastle because he has emerged as one of Benitez’s most trusted lieutenants during his time on Tyneside. The Spaniard really has no other left back that he trusts and will likely be forced to play someone out of position if Dummett isn’t fit for the Burnley game. Right back Javier Manquillo, centre half Ciaran Clark and winger Kenedy are probably the leading candidates, but none of them can provide what Dummett can on the left hand side of the defence. Having said that, the fact that the player is even being considered for the Burnley game means that his injury isn’t a long term one. That’s the big plus for Newcastle, because he’s unlikely to be out for any significant length of time, even if he does miss the Clarets clash. Still, Benitez will hope the Welshman overcomes this setback in order to reinforce the left hand side against Sean Dyche’s side.
