Former Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan believes that Mike Ashley will get a buyer for the club if he slaps on a reasonable price.

He thinks that Ashley should put the club up for sale at a “sensible price” in order to attract the buyer that the supporters so desperately want.

He says that he would not want to guess the potential price tag that could be slapped on Newcastle – but he urged the fans to keep supporting the club as Mike Ashley’s reign will not “last forever.”

“I always say he can’t last forever – he will go. Be patient and keep doing what you are doing which is supporting your football club because if that club goes down again because there’s no support there, it could dive again,” he told the Chronicle.

“So it’s better to be in the Premier League for people to come and buy it. If he puts a sensible price on it then he will get a buyer. It has to be a sensible price. I don’t know what that it is, I wouldn’t want to guess at it.”

OPINION

Kevin Keegan has just provided the supporters with a glimmer of hope regarding the future of their club – the majority of fans want Mike Ashley out, so for Keegan to reassure them will be a step in the right direction. He is right though – Ashley will only attract a buyer if he puts the club up for sale at a sensible price. Until then, the fans will be lumbered with him – and that is the last thing that they want to happen. They want Ashley out as soon as possible, so the faster he puts up a price, the closer he will be to leaving the club. However, Ashley is known to be stingy and it would not be surprising if he demanded a much higher price for the club than most are prepared to pay. He must avoid putting potential buyers off with a high price, and give the fans what they want – his departure from St James’ Park.
