Match of the Day pundit Mark Lawrenson has predicted that Newcastle United will finally secure their first win of the season over Southampton this Saturday.

The two sides meet at St Mary’s Stadium this weekend and Lawrenson believes that this is United’s time to win after having “sunk so low” in recent fixtures, which means that he has predicted a 2-0 victory for Rafa Benitez’ players.

He added that they did not play badly in their 1-0 loss to Brighton last weekend, as they had plenty of chances – but they just were not able to convert them.

“Because Newcastle have sunk so low in recent weeks, I see this game as their turn to win,” he told BBC Sport.

“The Magpies had plenty of chances against Brighton last weekend, with 27 shots at goal, but they could not take any of them. If they keep doing that, the goals will come – and so will their first win of the season.”

OPINION

Newcastle are no doubt desperate for a win now, and they have a better chance than any to get their first one against Southampton this weekend. Like Lawrenson pointed out, they are capable of creating goal scoring opportunities – they just have not been able to convert them yet. They will need to start taking their chances soon, as the more they waste them, the more likely they will not get a good result. Nevertheless, Southampton are a team who are also desperate for a win after having a mixed start to the season. They have not picked up many wins under Mark Hughes so far, and they will no doubt be looking to get one over Newcastle. This is a must-win for United – a phrase that has been used more often than not this season – as a loss would just heap more misery on them. They have no excuse not to gain points against the teams in the bottom half of the Premier League table – and seeming as they do not face any of the top-six until Boxing Day, they really need to make the most of this clash with the Saints.
