Some Newcastle United fans on social media contested the fact that Jamie Redknapp opted to question the decision to let Dwight Gayle join West Bromwich Albion.

The pundit regularly seen on Sky Sports remarked on the fact the 5ft 9in player (Source: Transfermarkt) had scored eight goals in his last ten league games and pointed out his replacement, Salomon Rondon, hadn’t scored in the Premier League as of yet.

These remarks by the Sky pundit saw a section of Magpies fans contest whether they were fair as some wanted to argue that not much Rafa Benitez could do about Gayle’s exit as it was clearly Mike Ashley decision, while others doubted he could deliver the goods in England’s top flight.

OPINION

The Gayle debate regarding whether Newcastle were right to let him go will go on and on until the Magpies start scoring. The 28-year-old forward joined the Baggies on loan for the season in August, as confirmed by WBA’s official site, as part of a loan-swap deal that saw the Magpies get Rondon. Given that Rondon hasn’t been able to regularly feature for Benitez’s due to an injury then it’s very hard for Redknapp to compare his form with Gayle. There’s no denying that Gayle is in red-hot form for the Baggies, though his last outing wasn’t inspiring, but everyone knows the attacker is a goalscoring machine when playing in the Championship. However given that the forward has only managed a grand total of 21 goals despite playing 99 times in the Premier League, then it’s very likely the Magpies would still be struggling for goals if he was still at the club. The 28-year-old is a hard-worker and seems a fantastic character to have in a dressing room but at the end of the day he struggles to score in England’s top-flight, therefore this section of fans are right to fire back at Redknapp over his remarks.
