Newcastle United have several positions that desperately need strengthening if they are to really make themselves a Premier League side over the next few seasons.

A squad in its current state will continue to toe the line of relegation to the Championship, with the Magpies unfortunately not having the quality to guarantee their Premier League status at the moment.

One of those positions which needs reinforcement is at wing-back, where DeAndre Yedlin and Paul Dummett essentially walk into the team every week with little competition.

Rafa Benitez attempted to strengthen there over the summer but was forced to prioritise other positions instead, and he will no doubt turn his attentions back to his full-backs in the coming two windows.

And, according to the Express, Manchester United star Antonio Valencia’s time at the club could be coming to an end soon, with the Ecuador international’s relationship with Jose Mourinho turning sour.

The 33-year-old flyer is out of contract at Old Trafford in the summer, and Newcastle must now lay the groundwork to snap him up on a free at the end of the season.

Valencia is a highly-experienced operator with more than 300 appearances in the Premier League, and he would be a perfect addition at right-back for the Magpies.

Despite his advancing age Valencia is still in outstanding shape and shows no signs of letting up, and could easily give the club two or three years of quality service.

His versatility is also a huge asset, with Valencia also able to play on the wing, which is another area where the club have struggled to perform so far this season.

Overall, a move for Valencia on a free transfer makes perfect sense for all involved – Benitez gets a brilliantly experienced Premier League performer, while Mike Ashley keeps his money in his pocket.
