Danny Murphy claimed that Newcastle United needed an Alan Shearer type player back at the club after watching them lose 1-0 to Brighton on Saturday.

The BBC pundit described the player the Magpies’ current side were lacking by simply referring to the fact they need a player like Shearer, a proven goalscorer, in order to help their cause.

Murphy then cheekily asked Shearer how his knees were before the Magpies legend quickly responded to reveal that he was not an option.

“They’re missing an Al (Shearer) aren’t they?” pondered Murphy on BBC One’s Match of the Day repeat (Sunday October 21, 9:53am).

“They need an Al back, how are your knees?”

Shearer then quickly responds with the word ‘gone’ before himself, Murphy and Gary Lineker all laughed before moving on to the next game.

OPINION

Murphy is spot-on to describe the player Newcastle are currently lacking as basically being Shearer, as with a player of that mould Rafa Benitez would be laughing as his side would continually rack up three points. The Magpies had several opportunities to get their win of the season against the Seagulls on Saturday but due to lacking a lethal finisher in front of goal, they came away from St James Park with a 1-0 defeat instead. While it’s silly to suggest Shearer lace up his boots once again, the Magpies do need to somehow find an attacker who has the same eye for goal as the legendary player did in his day. With a proven finisher upfront the Magpies would be able to make the most of their possession because as it stands, no one is finishing the chances created. Hopefully summer signing Salomon Rondon once returning from injury can grab a few goals, though it’s very hard to see him being as prolific as Shearer was during his time at St James Park.
