Some Southampton fans on social media heavily criticised attacker Charlie Austin for his performance during the 0-0 draw with Newcastle United on Saturday.

The 29-year-old forward played 63 minutes of his side’s latest Premier League outing before Mark Hughes opted to instruct the player to take up a place on the club’s bench.

This decision was no doubt celebrated by a section of Saints fan as several were frustrated with witnessing his efforts against the Magpies, one claimed on Twitter that Austin was a dead weight when he wasn’t able to contribute goals.

COMMENTARY

Newcastle fans should be relieved that Austin clearly isn’t up to scratch as the forward had opportunities to get all three points for his side on Saturday. It’s no surprise that this section of Saints supporters annihilated Austin for his latest display as he was woeful and it was easy to see why one claimed he should be nowhere near the first team. The 29-year-old has failed to score in all of his eight league games so far and it was easy to see why during his latest outing. Austin constantly made the wrong decision and just didn’t seem to believe that he was going to hit the back of the net with his efforts, even when he had clear cut chances. While some Saints fans highlighted Austin’s lack of pace, if he was a bit more clinical when the ball did fall to him, it wouldn’t have been an issue. However while several Saints supporters were fuming with their attacker, Magpies fans should be grateful that Austin is nowhere near being in good form.
