Newcastle United fans will no doubt be looking at Fulham with envy now that striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has found his scoring boots.
Mitrovic never really got going with the Magpies, but ever since he quit St James’ Park and arrived at Craven Cottage earlier in 2018, he has managed to net five goals in the process.
United however, have been struggling to find the back of the net, and many would have questioned the decision to offload the 24-year-old to their Premier League rivals.
However, Rafa Benitez only has himself to blame as Mitrovic has revealed that it was the Spaniard who failed to get the best out of him at St James’ Park.
“I didn’t suit his tactics, and I didn’t really feel comfortable to play, so he couldn’t get the best out of me,” he said, as quoted by the Daily Mail.
Nevertheless, despite the fact that Mitrovic’s reasons are far from personal, Benitez will no doubt be seething after hearing that he was to blame for the centre-forward’s demise at Newcastle.
Benitez no doubt did all he could to get the best out of the Serbia international, so to hear these comments will leave him rather angry.
After all, it is not fair for Mitrovic to blame Benitez for his lack of success with the Magpies – at the end of the day, it was also down to the fact that he was just not good enough.
The report also states that Benitez lost trust in the Serbian attacker due to his disciplinary issues – so it comes as no surprise that the manager ended up having no faith in him.
Benitez has a right to be frustrated following these remarks – all in all, they were a bit harsh.
The Newcastle manager now needs to focus on the job in hand and forget about the criticism that has been aimed at him.
