Shelvey needs to do more

Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey withdrew into his shell against Brighton as the game progressed despite having all the tools to help.

The 26-year-old midfielder is a fabulous talent as he has an amazing passing range, fantastic vision and the ability to be a matchwinner and should be judged to a higher standard then some of his teammates.

While that sounds unfair, he has previously proven his abilities in the Premier League and just can’t switch off when his side needs him.

Shelvey’s head appeared to drop when he realised his side were struggling to get back into the game and seemed to just accept that the Magpies were set to lose 1-0 to the Seagulls.

The midfielder wasn’t the worst performer for his side but when you consider he has all the tools to help Rafa Benitez’s team rack up points, he deserves as much criticism as some of his struggling  teammates.

Shelvey hasn’t exactly set the world alight all season, with perhaps his injury earlier in the campaign unsettling him, barring the first-half of the 3-2 defeat to Manchester United where he was sensational.

Benitez needs to somehow stop Shelvey shying around from taking the bull by the horns as if he is able to utilise the talents he has, then he can get more points on the board for the Magpies, regardless of whether his teammates up their game as well.

However if the 26-year-old makes a habit of withdrawing into his shell like he did against the Seagulls, then perhaps a spell on the sidelines is in his future.
