Neil Redfearn has quit his role as an U-23 coach at Newcastle United despite being at the club less than a month, according to the Chronicle.

The regional newspaper claim that the 53-year-old has left his role at the Magpies during to being offered a longer deal elsewhere.

The Chronicle report it was understood that Redfearn’s short term deal with the Magpies, which he requested, also meant that he could potentially accept a job elsewhere.

OPINION

This is potentially a blow for the Magpies as since Redfearn arrived, the U-23s’ results had improved. It can be argued how much of a part he played in helping the club’s U-23s side rack up some wins, but surely it isn’t a coincidence that his short stint coincided with the youth team picking up three wins in a row. It’s unknown where Redfearn will end up and it will be interesting to see which club have pounced on him for that reason. The Magpies really do need to get a replacement in as soon as they can, as the positive vibe surrounding the U-23s side must continue. The Magpies haven’t seen many players progress through their academy in recent seasons and it’s about time that changes. In order for that to happen the club need to ensure they have the right coaches in place to aid the potential Magpies of tomorrow.
