Many Newcastle United supporters have been reacting angrily to attacker Ayoze Perez’s performance in the 1-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

The Spaniard, on a reported £45,000-per-week at St James’ Park [Source: Spotrac], put in an improved display against Manchester United last time out but was unable to replicate that against Chris Hughton’s side.

The Seagulls took the lead through Beram Kayal’s deflected strike in the 29th minute, which made the golden chance Perez had saved by Mathew Ryan early on all the more painful for the Toon Army.

OPINION

You can see why the Newcastle fans were so frustrated by Perez. He does a lot of running around but there is always precious little end product from the Spaniard. That was demonstrated again against Brighton when he missed a glorious chance to put the hosts ahead at St James’ Park. Converting that chance would have completely changed the game and given everyone at the stadium a lift. Instead, the Magpies were left with a mountain to climb in the second half and they were ultimately unable to get the job done against Hughton’s side. Too often in recent years have we seen Perez get into good positions only to waste the resultant chance. It’s simply not good enough at the top level and it will continue to haunt Newcastle if it carries on. There isn’t enough talent in Rafael Benitez’s team for them to carry a player who routinely missed golden opportunities to score.
