A number of Newcastle United supporters have reacted doubtfully to the latest reports that a US consortium is preparing a takeover bid for the club.
The Daily Mail reported on Tuesday night that a group of investors were interested in making a bid to buy the Magpies from Mike Ashley, with the consortium said to be prepared to meet Ashley’s £300million asking price.
However, Newcastle fans have gotten excited about potential takeovers one too many times before, only to be routinely disappointed, and they’ve been expressing their scepticism over the latest update on Twitter.

With all due respect, any prospective buyers of @NUFC just get it done. All these potential deals which we can’t get over the line are starting to feel like a regular transfer window and they aren’t fun!

Even without seeing the numbers you’d have to expect NUFC Takeover rumours to move the needle significantly, Fans are clinging to anything that’ll rid the club of Ashley, Just makes you more sceptical though when they put those articles out there.

OPINION
You can understand why the Newcastle supporters are so sceptical of any takeover attempt at this stage. The rumours coming out now almost perfectly resemble takeover interest from years past, and until there’s some concrete evidence that this new group could actually complete their purchase of the club fans won’t be getting excited. Ashley is an impatient negotiator, that’s been demonstrated in the past, so it’s difficult to say with any degree of confidence that this new consortium will be able to get a deal done. Obviously the Magpies faithful want Ashley out of the club – you’d have to have been living under a rock not to know that that’s the case – but they don’t want to escape one tyrannical owner for an equally haphazard state of affairs under the next regime. They just want some proof that this reported interest in the club is real, and you can’t blame them for that.
