Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez will target a winger in the January transfer window after identifying the position as one of his top priorities, according to the Chronicle.

The regional newspaper reports on their website that the ex-Liverpool manager is worried about the lack of service being provided to the strike force that includes Joselu, Salomon Rondon and Yoshinori Muto.

United’s current wingers and attacking midfielders – such as Matt Ritchie, Kenedy, Jacob Murphy and Christian Atsu – are being looked upon to deliver more by the club’s coaching staff.

The report also says that the Magpies have listed the recruitment of another left-back as equally important.

OPINION

The lack of service being provided to Newcastle’s strike force is indeed rather worrying. If they cannot do that, then how are the forwards meant to convert chances? Something needs to be done, and in the mean time, it is no surprise that the club are asking more of their wingers. They have not been consistent this season, and that cannot continue to happen until the next transfer window. Yes, recruiting another winger is important – but Newcastle will need to cope until January before they can sign one. The results that they get from now up until Christmas will be hugely significant on their entire season, so the players will need to step up massively. United’s lack of creativity is as bright as day week in, week out – and this is ultimately what is letting them down. Most teams have an influential attacking midfielder or winger, but Mike Ashley’s lack of funds has prevented that from happening.
