Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez has spoken out about his post-Brighton meeting with owner Mike Ashley.
The Spaniard has admitted that he thinks is a rather good thing that the Sports Direct tycoon has his presence known and is attending games regularly, and said that his chat with Ashley after the 1-0 defeat to the Seagulls at St James’ Park “was a normal talk”.
Benitez added that the January transfer window has been discussed between the senior duo as Ashley tries to establish good relations with the players, staff and the manager himself, who is under pressure to guide Newcastle to their first win of the season over Southampton.
“It was a normal talk. The good thing is he is around and coming to games,” he said, as quoted by the Chronicle.
“The focus is now Southampton. The January transfer window is something we have spoken about behind the scenes, but that is not the focus now.”
OPINION
At the moment, how well the meeting went between Benitez and Ashley following the loss to Brighton is not exactly important right now. Yes, it is good that Ashley is trying to establish a good relationship with everyone at the club, but getting their first victory of the season over the Saints is of the most paramount importance. A win will not ensure that they are home and dry by any means, but it will definitely be a step in the right direction. Southampton are not known for being the strongest team at home, so Newcastle really need to make the most of this opportunity this weekend. The Saints are arguably in the mix for the relegation spots this term after narrowly avoiding that fate last time out, so Benitez must ensure that his side can pick up points from those also threatened with the drop. All in all though, the fact that Benitez had a promising conversation with Ashley is definitely a promising sign for things to come.
