Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has insisted that he is not selling the club this season despite confirming to the squad that he has held talks with suitors, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper reports that when Ashley went to dinner with boss Rafa Benitez and his players on Wednesday, he made it clear to them that no one has met his asking price for the club yet, which means he will not be selling it this season.

Ashley added that some prospective buyers had attempted to snatch Newcastle away from him at a cheap price whilst assuring the players that he would be a more present figure at training and at games.

OPINION

The majority of Newcastle fans will be far from pleased that Ashley has revealed that he has no intentions of selling the club this season. Nearly everybody wants him gone at the club and this is yet another setback for the supporters. When news of a potential takeover emerged, the fans undoubtedly got excited – but cold water has now been poured over their excitement. However, if he does change his ways and lives up to the promises he has made in regards to attending more matches as well as training, then fans may not be in store for more misery heaped upon them. These talks are a step in the right direction, so the news that he will not sell up may eventually prove to be a fairly good thing. Nevertheless, time will tell – and we will have to wait and see in January if he decides to loosen his purse strings.
